Our first impressions of Carol are shown at the beginning of the play. The first paragraph tells us that she is a child from a misfortunate background. This is shown when the stage direction reads wearing a school uniform which doubles as a street out fit and her Sunday best implying that she cannot other clothes apart from her necessary school uniform. Carol also cannot afford essential items such as a school bag; in the play it quotes that she is clutching a supermarket carrier bag. Analysis I think the tension level is quite high in the beginning of scene 35 due to the teachers worrying about Carols whereabouts as she has wondered off on her own. The stage directions state that Mrs. Kay is shouting, Carol, Carol it also states that, Colin is searching the far end of the beach. As the audience we feel all the teachers anxiety and concern to find Carol therefore this heightens the tension that extra bit more. The pressure is on Mr Briggs to talk her out of not jumping. He is very confrontational and does not really understand the problem and what is going on. Carol tells Mr Briggs Dont you come near me! which is extremely out of character for Carol. Throughout this scene Russell pauses several times causing tension to build up and up. Briggs thinks that he cant take anymore stress and that the incident with Carol has just pushed him to his limits. He has had to put up with an awful lot during the day. First it was the theft of sweets at the roadside cafi etc. Then he had trust in the children at the zoo, but they betray him by taking many of the zoo animals aboard the coach. Giving a bad name to the school and the school been banned to go there on future trips to that zoo. Ive had just about enough, and Im not putting up with a pile of silliness from the likes of you, this also shows that he does not regard her as an important person. Her disobedience is really getting to him and he is starting to take it personally just what are you trying to do to me. You can tell that she is really despondent at home at home and that it really means a lot to her if she stays I wana stay her. Where its nice. Even though she is in the progress class, she is acting quite intelligent. She can see through Mr Briggs Thats why briggsy! So stop going on you hate me. Carol is clever enough to know that she will never have the chance for her aspiration to come true Dont be friggin stupid. Then Mr Briggs starts to talk to Carol as his new self and it makes her realise that it wouldnt be any good staying. She also knows it would be hopeless plan, down to her specific disabilities getting in the way. If I stayed though, it wouldnt be no good. Even though she has realised she cant stay she still feels really desperate Im not goin back though. Then Briggs says something that is really out of character for him to say to a student please. Then all of sudden he started to sound like Mrs Kay and that is the beginning of the turning point for Mr Briggs when he turns into a new him. Youre as though you given up on life already. You sound as for you life is just ending. Carol then moves very close to the edge. Mr Briggs very aware of the danger holds out his hand to her, which is showing that he is not threatening her but showing a peace gesture. This makes her feel reassured and she starts to see the funny side of what is going on. Carol looks at him and a smile breaks across her face Sir, you should smile more often y look great when y smile. She still wonders what will happen to her when she gets back to school for causing trouble, but what about when we get back tschool? . She has almost given in but is still holding strongly onto her worries and wonders. Just as she gives in she slips. Briggs outstretched arm grabs out quickly and manages to pull her to him. He holds on to her with all his strength. Fortunately he manages to pull her up and she is secure. When Mr Briggs seems to turn into someone new, the children love it, but unfortunately for them its not a permanent fixture. When the coach comes back to Liverpool, it hits Mr Briggs. Briggs with Andrews asleep next to him sees the familiar surroundings and the kids hanging about the streets. He sits up puts his tie back to normal goes to straighten his hair and feels the cowboy hat. Its home to Mr Briggs when the coach arrives into Liverpool and makes him realise the responsibility and concern of his reputation. In the film the camera shot of the school behind Mr Briggs emphasises his feelings of responsibility, his concern and reputation. Also when the camera snaps Mr Briggs singing on the back of the coach with all the children. He sincerely cares about Rodrick, even though his friend is slightly mentally insane, which creates a very complex relationship between the souls. Although the narrator initially intends to save Roderick from his own demise, he was forced to reject Rodrick as Mr. Usher was the source of his own torment. The narrator originally earnestly desires to go to Rodrick’s house. In the text, the narrator talks of Rodrick as having â€Å"an earnest desire to see me, as his best, and indeed his only personal friend, with a view of attempting, by the cheerfulness of my society, some alleviation of his malady † (Poe 1). The narrator uses the words â€Å"desire†, â€Å"cheerfulness†, and â€Å"friend† to describe how Rodrick contacts him. The word choice that the narrator uses can be grouped together as â€Å"happy† words, just like in a usual relationship. The happiness proves that the narrator still believes that him and Rodrick are friends, even though he has not met Rodrick in years and that he wants to save Mr. Usher from his own demise. However, Rodrick quickly forces the narrator to lose his aura of happiness. Rodrick unnerves the narrator throughout the text to the point where the narrator gave up on Rodrick, which is apparent through the use of disheartening words. In the text, the narrator describes Rodrick as having â€Å"A cadaverousness of complexion ; an eye large, liquid, and luminous beyond comparison (Poe 2). The usage of the word â€Å"cadaverousness† alludes to death, and the usage of â€Å"luminous† makes Mr. Usher seem mysterious. Mysteriousness and death are common words to portray someone beyond repair. By using this kind of wording, Poe is revealing the narrator is disgusted by the new Rodrick. The disgust leads the narrator to rejection. The narrator is rejecting of Rodrick. In the text, the narrator states â€Å"His action was alternately vivacious and sullen. His voice varied rapidly from a tremulous indecision hich may be observed in the lost drunkard, or the irreclaimable eater of opium † (Poe 2). Poe uses the words â€Å"tremulous†, â€Å"drunkard†, and â€Å"opium† to describe Rodrick. A synonym for â€Å"tremulous† is â€Å"quavering†, which is a word that describes a voice during a lie. â€Å"Opium† and â€Å"drunkard† are words related to addictive vices, which cause people to lie. Lying causes people to not trust the liar, which leads to rejection. The rejection allows the narrator to let his conscious remain free. To keep his conscious alive, he has to rid himself of the dirtiness. The narrator must â€Å" wipe his hands clean† of Rodrick to be able to continue living. The narrator realizes that Rodrick is the source of his own problems. In the text, it states â€Å"But, as I placed my hand upon his shoulder, there came a strong shudder over his whole person ; a sickly smile quivered about his lips ; and I saw that he spoke in a low, hurried, and gibbering murmur, as if unconscious of my presence. Bending closely over him, I at length drank in the hideous import of his words † (Poe 6). The diction used has much hurt and anguish. The hurt exists because the narrator notices that his friend is doomed. The narrator also uses the words â€Å"shudder†, â€Å"hideous†, and â€Å"sickly† to describe how Rodrick acts. There are several components of a typical police report that need to be completed when filled in. First you will need to summarize and make sure to communicate in a clear and succinct manner. Second you will need to describe the scene and the state the alleged crime in occurring in. Also who was involved in the crime, as long as when and where did the crime take place with specific details. While filling out a police report, make sure you use simple language, because it might seem strange but if you state information using big words there are going to be people who will not understand what you are saying. Make sure you include all statements from any victims or witnesses, and have to be word for word from what they said. They will need to state the statement just to verify what we have them saying is accurate and they can’t change their story when it comes time to a trial or any other time. When gathering this information make sure you obtain all information regarding to witnesses or victims, regarding address, phone numbers, drivers license numbers, etc so we are able to contact them for any reason. Police Report for Scenario First I would summarize what happened, as well as describing the scene. I will entail that it happened in the parking lot of the shopping center. I will also have to include any witnesses who saw the gunshot take place or the ituation outside in the parking lot. I will have to make sure to get statements from all the victims, which are the male and female Asian as well as the witnesses and have them sign it. I will need to make sure all information if accurate with each person in order to proceed with the report and turn it in. Sufficient Cause Yes, my partner and I had sufficient cause to be on a stake out at the office supply, because there was a call into for a robbery during the afterhours. When a call is called in to certain police officers than they have the right to go and check out what happened there and see if they can find anything out at the sight. They can stay there for a while to make sure no one is hiding from the police, so they can have a possible chance to catch the person. Violation of Rights In my opinion we did not violate the man’s civil rights. When a police officer has a sketch of a suspect for a robbery and they see someone coming out of the building where a call was made then they have the right to pursue in finding out if he was the suspect. A police officer wouldn’t be violating your rights just by asking you to get down on the ground with your hands on your head. How would the officers know for sure who the suspect would be, even if five Asian men came out of the building? They actually wouldn’t so they would be asking all of them to get down on the ground with their hands behind their heads. The police officers were only doing their job, by using the tip with sketch from the dispatcher as well as the call from the woman who heard the call. If the man’s rights were violated then I would take action with the police officers by writing them up if this was the first time offense or suspend them for second offense. As the chief I would know that my police officers wouldn’t just go up to any Asian man and suspect them of any actions without having probable cause to think they are the suspect. Collect Damages The wife shouldn’t be able to collect any damages, because she didn’t have to get out of her car and start yelling at the police officers and become hysterical. When she started yelling at us we ordered her back to her car and she wouldn’t listen, which then enables the police to take action, because she can become a threat to us. Anyone who is imposed as a threat to a police officer, we are allowed to restrain in order to get them under control. Racial Profiling I don’t believe we engaged in any racial profiling with this man. We received a sketch regarding an Asian man who is suspected to be involved in robbing some office stores. It could be considered racial profiling if we were suspecting him as a suspect and we had a tip with a Caucasian or African American male. I just don’t see how racial profiling could be involved with the scenario since we were taking action with an Asian man and that the same race we received the sketch with. Citizen Review Board I would not support the creation of such board, since we have nothing for the citizens to review about our department. We took actions regarding the tip and sketch we received as well as the call from the lady who heard a gunshot and saw an Asian man carrying one in his back pocket. Now, if we have no control over this board then go ahead and do it, but just to let you know we have nothing to hide and we do our jobs to the books.
